Celtic music has its roots deep in the cultural traditions of the Gaelic inhabitants of Ireland, Scotland, and Manx and of the Brythonic inhabitants of Brittany, Wales, and Cornwall. Distinctions were made between the musical styles of these cultures such as the strict pentatonic scale of the ScoTtish and Irish traditional music and compressed octave range in Brythonic music.
Over the years, the genre has developed and grown to strongly and directly influence American music in the Appalachians along with supplying the foreground for bluegrass and country. Because such a vast amount of the first American settlers were from Celtic regions, their musical culture has helped shape ours. Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s continuing today, many rock bands have blended traditional Celtic sound into their music. The most well-known are U2 and The Cranberries. Because Celtic music has never ceased to evolve or spread its influence, the genre has lived on through the ages.
